Homemade caramels

2 cups sugar
2 cups cream
1 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla

Cook all ingredients in heavy pan until soft ball stage (about 238 degrees- takes about an hour) Stir occasionally. Pour into well buttered 9x13 pan. When cool, cut into squares and wrap in wax paper.
